This Baby Makes Seven
When we received the call about Isabella, I knew this would be a unique case. Isabella was not like many of the young women we often assist. At forty years old and expecting her seventh child, she stood out in our records. Her journey to reach out for help was one of resilience, pride, and deeply ingrained love for her family.
A Call for Help
The call came through from an attorney affiliated with an agency we work with. Isabella had contacted them, unsure of where to turn and deeply apprehensive about trusting anyone. She had avoided prenatal care, unsure of her due date, and was determined to keep this pregnancy a secret from her older children. To complicate matters, Isabella didn’t want anyone visiting her home and was hesitant to share much about her situation.
Pilar, a trusted member of our team fluent in Spanish, made the initial contact. We arranged to meet Isabella at a drive-thru restaurant—a neutral location that felt safe to her. On a sunny Saturday, Pilar and I waited for what felt like hours, uncertain if Isabella would appear. Finally, a petite woman holding the hand of a spirited two-year-old boy crossed the street toward us. As soon as she climbed into the van, her hesitancy began to ease. Over a shared meal, her story unfolded.
Isabella’s Journey
Isabella worked tirelessly cleaning homes to support her family. As a single mother and an undocumented immigrant, her life had been anything but easy. Yet, her pride in providing for her children without relying on anyone was evident. This pregnancy, however, was different. She felt it was impossible to care for another child on her own. Her older children were visiting relatives in Mexico, and Isabella’s goal was clear: she wanted this baby delivered and settled with a loving family before her teenagers returned.
Despite her independence, Isabella’s vulnerability shone through. Her courage in reaching out showed just how much she wanted what was best for her unborn child.
Finding the Right Family
We worked closely with Isabella to find a family that met her specific requests. She wanted a couple living nearby who would cherish the child. The attorney provided profiles of potential families, and over coffee, Pilar translated letters and shared photographs with Isabella. Her stoicism melted when she chose the Moores, a loving couple who had waited years to expand their family. Isabella’s decision to proceed with them felt right for everyone involved.
The Moores were thrilled but remained cautious, understanding the delicate nature of the situation. Their first meeting with Isabella was arranged at my home. While our children played noisily in the backyard, the adults had a quiet, heartfelt discussion. By the end of their time together, Isabella’s decision was final. The Moores would be the proud parents of her seventh child.
The Birth of Rescue Baby #268
Days before her older children were due to return, Isabella’s labor began. Angel, a compassionate volunteer, accompanied Isabella to the hospital. Though she initially resisted help, Isabella’s resolve softened as labor progressed. The Moores arrived just in time to witness their son’s first cries. Isabella, with great strength, kissed her baby’s forehead before placing him in the Moores’ arms, entrusting them with her precious gift.
A New Chapter for Everyone
After a short hospital stay, Isabella was reunited with her energetic son, Miguel. Watching the joy in her eyes as she held him was a reminder of her resilience and maternal love. She returned to work, quietly resuming life with her children while cherishing the knowledge that her baby was thriving with the Moores.
The Moores welcomed their son, rescue baby #268, into their lives with open hearts. They’ve built a strong bond with Isabella, who continues to be a part of their family’s journey in her own way. For Isabella, the decision she made has been reaffirmed time and again as she sees the life she gave her son unfold.
